Our Open Mic

photography Recently, I ventured for the first time into the medium of still photography. I haven't posted here in a while, so I figured the results would be a good chance to contribute. Tell me what you think.

It's pretty cloudy walking along these tracks down to the ocean in Del Mar. 4th of July weekend and the main beach is packed, but adjacent to these tracks are a few local surfers and beach-goers. I love finding these somewhat hidden spots, and feeling like I'm apart of something hidden and special. I want to live in this house behind me, but it has to cost at least 6 mil. Someday.

I found this landscape up north at Arcosanti. As an architect/planning student I had to visit this place at least once before I left. It turned out that Paolo Soleri, the mastermind behind this small development and many other genius designs, was giving a lecture that afternoon. So we sat in and listened to the 90 year old architect's thoughts on society, religion, and the afterlife. If you ever get a chance, Soleri gives a lecture every Wednesday, and I highly recommend it.

The silhouetted rectangle is the remains of the Temple of Apollo on the Greek Island of Naxos. We had just arrived at our hotel, so I had to grab my camera and run down the hill towards the island, trying to get close enough to frame the sunset inside the ruins. By this point in the trip, however, my converse had just about seperated the cloth from the soles (basically making them sandles), which made the rocks and sand a difficult obstacle. I eventually made it to the Temple only to find that everyone else visiting Naxos had the same idea I did.

This picture is from Huntington beach on a winter morning. It was pretty cold and foggy, but sure enough there were dozens of surfers up and down the beach. The surfer to the left was just staring out at the sea for a while, so I took the liberty of capturing him in this post-apocalyptic-ish setting.

Have you ever been alone in a place that is so fantastic you swear you are gonna come back and bring all your friends with you? This is one of those places for me. This carousel is in Parc de la Villette in Paris. It was a chilly morning in May when I took this, and for me May is summertime and I was expecting this place to look like Coney Island in its hayday, but I was the only one around. I seperated from the group I was with to cross the river and check out this cool mini-carnival, and subsequently got lost for hours in Paris, but had one of the best times ever.

This panaramic photo-which is a series of photos photoshopped together-was taken in Germany on our way to The Black Forest. We, being the group of students and I, stopped and ate at the restaurant shown on the right. It was cold and it started to rain while we were here, but it wasn't anything a hot chocolate couldn't fix.

I found these little guys on this dirt road next to a college campus I was staying at in Thessaloniki, Greece. It was an American Agricultural School where they grew all their own food, dairy, and grain for their cattle. I was there in August when it was really humid and the mosquitoes were always hungry, but the students and faculty were all really nice and showed us around the city. We even got to feel the sting of tear gas still lingering in the air from a huge protest in the downtown area.

I took this photo outside a small country town near Stuttgart, Germany. This field is dozens of acres in size, and every single flower was planted by one herdsman!! I forget the exact story, but the main point was one man came out here and planted all these magnificent flowers that came all the way up to your knees. This field was definitely one of my favorite stops in Europe because it took a little hiking to get here and it was completley remote, except for the electrical transformers nearby.

This picture was taken in my hometown on Catalina Island. Growing up we used to always catch crabs and throw 'em at eachother, but I don't know how we ever caught em because they were hard enough to just get close enough to snap a picture of.

I took this photo during the last full moon. I don't get out as much as I would like with my camera, but this one was easy because I could take it from my front yard. I made my friends wait for me while I tried to get a good photo because it was the perfect setting. It's got that Edgar Allen Poe feeling to it, don't you think?
